Government grants are a great source of assistance for business, education, and many other purposes. Government grants aren’t just given out to everyone: you have to apply and show why they should give it to you instead of somebody else. Start-up grants are popular as well. These grants help a business to open. A grant is given for a little over a year and then decreases each year after that, because it's expected that the business will grow later. The government usually asks for progress on start-up grants, of course.

Equipment and facility grants are offered to finance physical space and materials needed for a business. To get one, you will need to explain how the materials are necessary for your business. Progress reports have to be sent periodically.

Endowment grants are for non-profit businesses to raise funds for work and services that the non-profit provides. Interest on the endowment’s principal stays continuous, so the endowment grant doesn't have to meet operating costs that the business itself can handle.

Program related investments are loans at low interest given to non-profit groups that have to be paid back over time.

Some government grants are for individuals, too. Scholarship grants can pay for a college education without having to be paid back, so they are instead of or in addition to student loans.
